Žďárské Vrchy broken landscape is characterised by changing meadows, grazing land, fields, forests and ponds. It is interlaced with an irregular network of hedgerows, tracks, wooded groves or groups of trees and bushes. To this day, the landscape has maintained the character of a balanced and well-preserved cultivated landscape. The PLA is situated in the northeastern part of Českomoravská Vrchovina uplands, where there is its central massif surrounded by neighbouring hills. There are flat and wide valleys, mild slopes and curved hilltops that are typical of this upland and hill landscape. The bedrock consists of metamorphic rocks, different kinds of gneiss, migmatites and mica shist with some areas of serpentinite and crystalline limestone. The climate is rather cold, wet and windy. It is the site of the heads of a number of Moravian and Bohemian rivers (Sázava, Svratka, Chrudimka, Doubrava, Oslava). There is a large network of as well. For this reason, the PLA was designated as a natural water accumulation protected area.
The area is half covered by forests. The original fir-beech forest has been replaced by spruce monoculture in most of the area. The area is characterised by quite poor flora. Mountain and foothills elements are present. Peat coenoses and wet peat meadows are especially significant. A range of protected and endangered plant species occurs here, for example Streptopus amplexifolius, Stellaria longifolia, Cicerbita alpina (alpine deergrass), Baeothryon alpinium, Drosera rotundifolia (round-leaved sundew) and various kinds of orchids, gentians and sedges. Among the protected fauna found here are, for example Salamandra salamandra (fire salamander), Ciconia nigra (black stork), Dryocopus maritimus (black woodpecker), Aegolius funereus (Telgamalm’s owl), Glaucidium passerinum (pygmy owl), Corvus corax (raven), Ficedula parva (red-breasted flycatcher), Sorex alpinus (alpine shrew), Microtus agrestis (field vole) and others.
